Presented by: Fr. Elias Mary Mills
Rector of the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, LaCrosse, Wisconsin
Learn the history of the Feast of Our Lady of Ransom and the founding of the religious Order later known as the Mercedarians. In the 13th century its members would undertake to deliver Christians, taken captive by the Moors on the seas and in Spain itself, and offer themselves, if necessary, as a ransom pledge. Pope Leo XIII encouraged the devotion to Our Lady of Ransom by making this feast proper to all the dioceses of England, with a focus on how Our Lady ransoms us from the slavery of our sins and brings us the grace of conversion. Our Lady of Ransom would later develop into a devotion to Our Lady of Mercy. Our Lady of Ransom also is one of the historical expressions of devotion to Our Lady as Coredemptrix.
