The Rules of Discernment were written by St. Ignatius of Loyola to help souls become aware and understand to some extent the different movements which are caused in the soul -- the good, to receive them, and the bad to reject them. St. Ignatius of Loyola wrote the Spiritual Exercises in the 16th century because he thought that some of his own experiences might be helpful to others.
When offered previously, those attending found the rules and Teresa’s excellent teaching proved to be very helpful. The consensus was that these rules can be life-changing for those serious about the spiritual life.
